A whiteboard marked their progress by mapping brief descriptions of each scene. Once "breaking" was done, the credited author wrote an outline for the episode, which was checked by Whedon or Noxon. The writer then wrote a full script, which went through a series of drafts, and finally a quick rewrite from the show runner. The final article was used as the shooting script. Buffy the Vampire Slayer first aired on March 10, , as a mid season replacement for the show Savannah on the WB network , and played a key role in the growth of the Warner Bros.

In , the show went into syndication in the United States on local stations and on cable channel FX ; the local airings ended in , and the FX airings lasted until but returned to the network in Beginning in January , it began to air in syndication in the United States on Logo.

Chiller also aired a hour Thanksgiving Day marathon on November 25, While the seventh season was still being broadcast, Sarah Michelle Gellar told Entertainment Weekly she was not going to sign on for an eighth year; "When we started to have such a strong year this year, I thought: After protests from fans about early episodes being edited for their pre- watershed time-slot, from the second run mid-second season onwards , the BBC gave the show two time slots: From the fourth season onwards, the BBC aired the show in anamorphic Whedon later said that Buffy was never intended to be viewed this way.

In August , Pivot announced that, for the first time, episodes of Buffy would be broadcast in high-definition and in a widescreen Other problems included missing filters, editing errors, and poorly re-rendered CGI. Buffy features a mix of original , indie , rock and pop music. The composers spent around seven days scoring between fourteen and thirty minutes of music for each episode. Despite this, their goal was to produce "dramatic" orchestration that would stand up to film scores.

Alongside the score, most episodes featured indie rock music, usually at the characters' venue of choice, The Bronze. Buffy music supervisor John King explained that "we like to use unsigned bands" that "you would believe would play in this place. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Alongside these series, Whedon has cited cult film Night of the Comet as a "big influence," [73] and credited the X-Men character Kitty Pryde as a significant influence on the character of Buffy.

Buffy episodes often include a deeper meaning or metaphor as well. Whedon explained, "We think very carefully about what we're trying to say emotionally, politically, and even philosophically while we're writing it In the world of Buffy the problems that teenagers face become literal monsters. A mother can take over her daughter's life " Witch " ; a strict stepfather-to-be really is a heartless machine " Ted " ; a young lesbian fears that her nature is demonic " Goodbye Iowa " and " Family " ; a girl who has sex with even the nicest-seeming guy may discover that he afterwards becomes a monster " Innocence ".

The love affair between the vampire Angel and Buffy was fraught with metaphors. For example, their night of passion cost the vampire his soul. Sarah Michelle Gellar said: You sleep with a guy and he turns bad on you. Buffy struggles throughout the series with her calling as Slayer and the loss of freedom this entails, frequently sacrificing teenage experiences for her Slayer duties. Her difficulties and eventual empowering realizations are reflections of several dichotomies faced by modern women and echo feminist issues within society.

In the episode " Becoming Part 2 ," when Joyce learns that Buffy is the Slayer, her reaction has strong echoes of a parent discovering her child is gay, including denial, suggesting that she try "not being a Slayer," and ultimately kicking Buffy out of the house. Bianca Lawson , who played vampire slayer Kendra Young in season 2 of the show, originally auditioned for the role of Cordelia Chase before Charisma Carpenter was cast in the role.

She decided to keep trying for the role of Buffy, and after several more auditions, she landed the lead. The character of Angel was only supposed to appear briefly in the pilot episode. When the pilot was due to be reshot in September , scouting for Angel began again, and by chance a talent agent spotted David Boreanaz on the sidewalk walking his dog. Anthony Stewart Head had already led a prolific acting and singing career, [84] but remained best known in the United States for a series of twelve coffee commercials with Sharon Maughan for Taster's Choice instant coffee.

Nicholas Brendon , unlike other Buffy regulars, had little acting experience, instead working various jobs—including production assistant , plumber's assistant, veterinary janitor, food delivery, script delivery, day care counselor, and waiter—before breaking into acting and overcoming his stutter. Strong later played the role of Jonathan Levinson, a recurring character for much of the series run.

Alyson Hannigan was the last of the original six to be cast. Following her role in My Stepmother Is an Alien , [89] she appeared in commercials and supporting roles on television shows throughout the early s. Hannigan described her approach to the character through Willow's reaction to a particular moment: Willow sadly tells Buffy that her Barbie doll was taken from her as a child.

Buffy asks her if she ever got it back. Willow's line was to reply "most of it. Hannigan figured Willow would be happy and proud that she got "most of it" back. That indicated how she was going to play the rest of the scene, and the role, for that matter, and defined the character. The Buffy opening sequence provides credits at the beginning of each episode, with the accompanying music performed by Californian rock band Nerf Herder. In the DVD commentary for the first Buffy episode , Whedon said his decision to go with Nerf Herder's theme was influenced by Hannigan, who had urged him to listen to the band's music.

But the theme quickly changes: Buffy has inspired a range of official and unofficial works, including television shows, books, comics, games, and podcasts. This expansion of the series encouraged use of the term " Buffyverse " to describe the fictional universe in which Buffy and related stories take place. The storyline was continued in a series of comic books produced by Joss Whedon and published by Dark Horse Comics , which serve as a canonical continuation of the television series. Joss Whedon was interested in a film continuation in , [96] but such a film has yet to materialize.

In July , 20th Century Fox Television began development on a television reboot of the series. Monica Owusu-Breen is to serve as showrunner and has been working on the script with Whedon, who is to be an executive producer. At the time of Buffy' s 20th anniversary in , Whedon expressed fear of reboots, commenting that when "something [is brought] back, and even if it's exactly as good as it was, the experience can't be.

You've already experienced it, and part of what was great was going through it for the first time. You have to meet expectations and adjust it for the climate, which is not easily [done]. The spin-off Angel was introduced in October , at the start of Buffy season four. Like Buffy , it was produced by the production company Mutant Enemy.

At times, it performed better in the Nielsen ratings than its parent series did. The series was given a darker tone, focusing on the ongoing trials of Angel in Los Angeles. His character is tormented by guilt following the return of his soul, punishment for more than a century of murder and torture.

During the first four seasons of the show, he works as a private detective in a fictionalized version of Los Angeles, California , where he and his associates work to "help the helpless" and to restore the faith and "save the souls" of those who have lost their way. In season five, the Senior Partners of Wolfram and Hart take a bold gamble in their campaign to corrupt Angel, giving him control of their Los Angeles office. Angel accepts the deal as an opportunity to fight evil from the inside. When Glenn Quinn Doyle left the series during its first season, Alexis Denisof Wesley Wyndam-Pryce , who played a recurring character in the last nine episodes of season three of Buffy , took his place.

Angel also continued to appear occasionally on Buffy. The storyline has been continued in the comic book series Angel: Outside of the TV series, the Buffyverse has been officially expanded and elaborated on by authors and artists in the so-called "Buffyverse Expanded Universe. Similarly, writers for the TV series were under no obligation to use information which had been established by the Expanded Universe, and sometimes contradicted such continuity.

Dark Horse has published the Buffy comics since Following the publication of Tales of the Vampires in , Dark Horse Comics halted publication on Buffyverse-related comics and graphic novels. The company produced Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight with forty issues from March to January , picking up where the television show left off—taking the place of an eighth canonical season. Pocket Books hold the license to produce Buffy novels , of which they have published more than sixty since These sometimes flesh out background information on characters; for example, Go Ask Malice details the events that lead up to Faith arriving in Sunnydale.

Five official Buffy video games have been released on portable and home consoles. The popularity of Buffy and Angel has led to attempts to develop more on-screen ventures in the fictional 'Buffyverse'. These projects remain undeveloped and may never be greenlit. In , two potential spinoffs were in discussion: The Animated Series and Ripper. The Animated Series was a proposed animated TV show based on Buffy ; Whedon and Jeph Loeb were to be executive producers for the show, and most of the cast from Buffy were to return to voice their characters.

A three-minute pilot was completed in , but was never picked up. Whedon revealed to The Hollywood Reporter: We had six or seven hilarious scripts from our own staff — and nobody wanted it. Ripper was originally a proposed television show based upon the character of Rupert Giles portrayed by Anthony Stewart Head. In , a year after the first public discussions on Buffy: The Animated Series and Ripper , Buffy was nearing its end. Espenson has said that during this time spinoffs were discussed, "I think Marti talked with Joss about Slayer School and Tim Minear talked with him about Faith on a motorcycle.

I assume there was some back-and-forth pitching. Dushku declined the pitch for a Buffyverse TV series based on Faith and instead agreed to a deal to produce Tru Calling. Dushku explained to IGN: It would have been Faith, probably on a motorcycle, crossing the earth, trying to find her place in the world.

Finally, during the summer of after the end of Angel , a movie about Spike was proposed. In September , Sci-Fi Wire ran an interview with Sarah Michelle Gellar in which she said she would not rule out returning to her most iconic role: You show me a script; you show me that it works, and you show me that [the] audience can accept that, [and] I'd probably be there. Those are what my hesitations are. Buffy is notable for attracting the interest of scholars of popular culture, as a subset of popular culture studies , and some academic settings include the show as a topic of literary study and analysis.

Critics have emerged in response to the academic attention the series has received. For example, Jes Battis, who authored Blood Relations in Buffy and Angel , admits that study of the Buffyverse "invokes an uneasy combination of enthusiasm and ire" and meets "a certain amount of disdain from within the halls of the academy.

The Whedon Studies Association produces the online academic journal Slayage and sponsors a biennial academic conference on the works of Whedon. The popularity of Buffy has led to websites, online discussion forums, works of Buffy fan fiction and several unofficial fan-made productions. The series, which employed pop culture references as a frequent humorous device, has itself become a frequent pop culture reference in video games, comics and television shows and has been frequently parodied and spoofed. Sarah Michelle Gellar has participated in several parody sketches, including a Saturday Night Live sketch in which the Slayer is relocated to the Seinfeld universe, [] and adding her voice to an episode of Robot Chicken that parodied a would-be eighth season of Buffy.

In March in honor of Buffy the Vampire Slayer's 20th-anniversary, Entertainment Weekly reunited Joss Whedon and the whole cast for their first joint interview and photo shoot in over a decade. Buffy helped put The WB on the ratings map, but by the time the series landed on UPN in , viewing figures had fallen. The series' high came during the third season, with 5. This was probably due to the fact that both Gellar and Hannigan had hit movies out during the season Cruel Intentions and American Pie respectively. The series' low was in season one at 3.

The show's series finale " Chosen " pulled in a season high of 4. Because of this, The WB ordered a full season of 22 episodes for the series' second season. Beginning with the episode " Innocence ," which was watched by 8. Due to its large success in that time slot, it remained on Tuesdays at 8: With its new timeslot on The WB, the show quickly climbed to the top of The WB ratings and became one of their highest-rated shows for the remainder of its time on the network.

The show always placed in the top 3, usually only coming in behind 7th Heaven. Between seasons three and five, Buffy flip-flopped with Dawson's Creek and Charmed as the network's second highest-rated show. While it was still one of their highest rated shows on their network, The WB felt that the show had already peaked and was not worth giving a salary increase to the cast and crew. UPN on the other hand, had strong faith in the series and picked it up for a two-season renewal.

The relaunching had effect, as the season premiere attracted the second highest rating of the series, with 7.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer showed the whole world, and an entire sprawling industry, that writing monsters and demons and end-of-the world is not hack-work, it can challenge the best. As well as influencing Doctor Who , Buffy influenced its spinoff series Torchwood.

Several Buffy alumni have gone on to write for or create other shows. Meanwhile, the Parents Television Council complained of efforts to "deluge their young viewing audiences with adult themes. In "The Time of Angels", in the distant future, a large group of Weeping Angels have been trapped in a catacomb for centuries, slowly losing their form due to starvation.

When a rogue angel causes a starship to crash into the catacomb, the Angels feed off its leaking radiation and revive.

The Weeping Angels are seen moving on-screen for the first time when they realise that Amy Pond cannot see them. They are defeated when they fall into a crack in time and are erased from existence. In "The Angels Take Manhattan", numerous Weeping Angels including one in the form of the Statue of Liberty have taken control of a building in New York, holding victims captive so they can repeatedly feed off their time energy.

Rory Williams and Amy Pond create a paradox by having Rory kill himself before he can be fed off to death. This paradox kills all but one of the Angels and erases the events from history. However, this surviving Angel encounters the Doctor and his companions in and sends Amy and Rory back in time, separating them from the Doctor forever. After Clara touches the hand of the Weeping Angel, believing it to be a statue, the Weeping Angels start digging their way out of the snow and surround The Doctor and Clara, the snowstorm making it difficult for either Clara or The Doctor to keep eye contact.

Later in the episode another Weeping Angel unspecified if it is one from earlier or not is seen in the town of Christmas as one of the many species that have managed to bypass the forcefield around Trenzalore in an attempt to silence the Doctor. The Angel is seen staring into a mirror the Doctor has placed, thus remaining quantum-locked whilst it looks at its reflection. The Daleks usually come out on top in such polls.

Moray Laing, Editor of Doctor Who Adventures , praised the concept of escaping a monster by not blinking, something both simple and difficult to do. Weeping Angel is the name of a hacking tool revealed in Vault 7 , co-developed by the CIA and MI5 , used to exploit smart TVs for the purpose of covert intelligence gathering. Once installed in a suitable TV, the tool enables the television to record its surroundings while appearing to be turned off so-called "Fake-Off".

Weeping Angels are described as quantum-locked entities that do not exist if one attempts to observe them. Fictional species in Doctor Who and spin-offs. Evan asked him what he saw when he looked at him and despite seeing only the image of Apocalypse, Warren told him that he could see nothing but goodness in him. Warren left the school with Bobby and Rachel to help his fellow mutants in the battle against the Avengers. In an apocalyptic possible future, an aging Frank Castle warns the present-day Deadpool of the "son of Archangel".

As part of the All-New, All-Different Marvel event, Angel has mysteriously reverted somehow to his pre-LifeSeed blue-skinned Archangel form, and appears as a member of Magneto's new Uncanny X-Men in order to protect mutantkind at all costs. His mind had also changed, having become nothing more than a silent and mindless predator controlled by Psylocke. Under her psychic leash, Archangel became a heavy hitter in Magneto's X-Men. Psylocke and Magneto travel to Green Ridge, Colorado to investigate reports of an up-and-coming preacher who looks identical to the original Angel.

They discover that he is indeed the Angel who was created by the Celestial LifeSeed and he is attracting a cult of religious fanatics around him. Clan Akkaba are constantly harvesting Angel's rapidly-regenerating metal wings in order to prevent the Death persona from fully possessing Angel and grafting them into his clones, creating a mindless clone army of blue-skinned Archangels.

The silent Archangel who is a member of Magneto's team of X-Men was merely the first such clone who retained trace memories of the original Angel and thus managed to escape to join Magneto's X-Men. Magneto and Psylocke are captured, but Psylocke easily escapes. She gets into a fight with Fantomex, who was sent by Magneto as back-up with Mystique, who herself freed Magneto.

Magneto at the time gave up on being a hero, as the rest of the X-Men had either disbanded or fled to Limbo, but then was inspired by Angel to restart his own version of the Uncanny X-Men. In the present, a chastised and repentant Angel explains to Magneto and Psylocke that he and the silent Archangel are ultimately two half-parts of the same one being, so they physically combine into a new blue-skinned persona.

This new Archangel being is unsure of who or what he now was, but was determined to find out. When Beast decides to travel back in time to recruit the original X-Men to stop Scott committing mutant genocide, [71] Angel accompanies his teammates into the future, but initially prefers to return to the past rather than remain in such a twisted present. Even after his teammates vote to remain until they have saved the future, Angel expresses curiosity about what has happened to his own future self, as no reference has been made to his present condition.

Together, the two heroes are able to defeat the terrorists and capture Madame Hydra. Frustrated after seeing what will happen to himself in the future, the younger Angel defects from the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning and joins the older Cyclops' new team of outlaw X-Men. After the X-Men go to war against the Inhumans over the fate of the Terrigen , Angel joins the rest of the time-displaced X-Men in hopes of finally returning them to their own timeline.

However they discover that they aren't from Earth 's timeline and with no way of figuring out which timeline they're from, they become stranded on Earth Warren's primary power is that of natural flight , due to his large feathered wings. His wings have superhuman strength, and they have a very flexible skeletal structure that enables him to press them to the back of his torso and legs with only the slightest bulge visible under his clothing.

His bones are hollow, his body processes food much more efficiently than a normal human body and does not store any excess fat, and he possesses a greater proportionate muscle mass than normal. As a result, his strength, speed, agility, flexibility, endurance, reflexes, coordination, balance, eyesight and hearing are at their peak. Elements of his anatomy are comparable to those of birds, especially birds of prey. His eyes can withstand high-speed winds which would damage the average human eye. He can breathe at high velocities or altitudes, and he can cope with the reduced temperatures at high altitudes for prolonged periods of time, giving him a greater-than-normal capacity to endure low temperatures in areas such as the Arctic.

The strength in his natural wings can easily break a man's arm or leg, or even put someone through a wall. While he generally flies below the height of clouds, Angel can reach almost twice this height with little effort. At his absolute maximum, he can reach the highest recorded altitude of a bird in flight — about the height of Mount Everest — but he can only remain that high for a few minutes.

Although flight is as natural a mode of transportation for Angel as for a bird, he can only fly nonstop under his own power for around half a day. He has undergone heavy training with Professor X , especially in mastering his flight indoors. Angel is also an accomplished hand-to-hand combatant, having defeated several of the werewolf-like homo superior when Wolverine is defeated. As the result of a secondary mutation which has been shown inconsistently, Angel also develops a healing factor and can heal others by mixing his blood with theirs, provided they have a matching blood type to Warren's.

At times, he cannot aid the terminally wounded; at others, he can actually raise the recently dead. It is revealed that the Celestial Technology bonded to him by Apocalypse prevents Elixir from regenerating his wings. Aside from his superhuman powers, the original Warren was a most-highly capable businessman and the new Warren has accordingly retained or "inherited" his position as the primary stockholder and chairman emeritus former chairman of the board-of-directors of Worthington Industries.

Archangel possesses a set of metal techno-organic wings grafted onto him by the genetic engineering of Apocalypse when Apocalypse renames him the Horseman of Death. The wings give him the ability to project his metallic feathers out from his wings at great speed and with tremendous force, enabling them to pierce even steel. Archangel does not have complete control over his feathers, which sometimes shoot from his wings against his conscious will in response to his unconscious aggressive drives.

The feathers are laced with a neural inhibitor chemical, generated by Archangel's body, which induces temporary paralysis. These wings allow him to fly at speeds much faster than his natural, feathered wings. The edges of these metal wings are also razor sharp, allowing them to be used as weapons. While he believes he has lost his metal wings when he re-grows his organic ones, the Celestial Technology never leaves his system, and his natural-appearing wings contain the Celestial technology.

When implanted into regular human beings, the technology induces a transformation similar to that of Warren's. When his feathered wings are severed from his body by Wolfsbane, his metal wings grow back in their place. Furthermore, his skin reverts to blue and his old Archangel costume appears. However, within minutes, they begin to painfully re-grow, indicating his healing factor may still exist. In issue 14 of X-Men: Second Coming , Dr. Nemesis questions the rate that they would grow as the biology is different from Colossus' armor. After the death of Warren and the Archangel persona via the Life Seed, Angel comes back to life as an amnesiac with healing powers far beyond what he was ever able to originally accomplish, as demonstrated when he resurrects a recently dead dog.

The time displaced Warren, from All-New X-Men , initially started with feathered wings, but during The Black Vortex saga, he submitted to the vortex and was imbued with Cosmic wings.

    About Valerie Tarico

He can also discharge cosmic blasts that can destroy spaceships. He can also feed off cosmic energy, thus survive in outer space and without sustenance. In the timeline, Warren becomes Werner, a young witchbreed as mutants are known in this reality who hides his mutation using garments sewn by his mother. Unfortunately, he is captured and almost burnt at the stake by the Grand Inquisitor Enrique a.

Magneto , but rescued at the last moment by Carlos Javier and his students. This friendship causes jealousy on the part of Scotius Summerisle , who knows of the deception and fears Werner also knows and is trying to court her. They almost come to blows but are reconciled when circumstances lead to Jean's death. It then comes to light that Werner is unaware of Master John's true gender but states that he "was in love with that young man".

Instead, as most of New York is destroyed, Angel works with Apocalypse's mutant elite, Magneto and his X-Men, and even the Human High Council to maintain and operate a nightclub aptly named Heaven, where humans and mutants can intermingle. When two of his employees, Scarlett MacKenzie and Karma , are apprehended and later killed, Angel finally chooses a side. Strapping himself down with a number of bombs, he attacks Apocalypse's citadel in a suicide run.

His sacrifice shuts down the protective shields surrounding the citadel, providing the X-Men with a much needed entrance. In this alternate universe, Warren loses his fortune and becomes an authentic angel, who helps anybody who needs him. He joins the New York City Police and his old friend Iceman to protect the world-altering Torch of the city against the forces of Mephisto.

Archangel appeared in the comic book Exiles as a member of Weapon X , a more ruthless version of the self-titled reality hopping team. This Archangel, hailing from Earth, appears very much like his Earth counterpart, even wearing a costume very similar to the one the version wears at the time. Of course, this Archangel, since he is selected for Weapon X rather than the Exiles themselves, is more savage, employing the excessive use of automatic weapons.

Archangel is, at some point, replaced by a sociopathic version of Ms. Marvel after he is supposedly sent home for completing his number of missions. He is actually placed in the Panoptichron gallery of fallen Exiles. Why he is placed there is unknown, but he is one of only five recruits to return home alive and intact, alongside She-Hulk , Beak , Iron Man , and Daredevil. Angel is infected by the zombies Rogue and Ms. The zombies have detected unaffected humans inside. In the alternate reality represented in the comic book Mutant X , Warren Worthington is captured by Apocalypse much like he is in the main Marvel timeline.
