Anthony Hope has a very distinctive voice, one I appreciated and feel is well worth reading to experience though the Prisoner of Zenda is probably a better book to read first. The overall idea here is also good; we definitely need a book about the pitfalls of being king, and I always like a good love story where love fails to prevail at the end, and some of the scenes, particularly the duel with Wetter, were very well crafted.

That being said, the whole of this book ended up being for me much less than the sum of its parts. Perhaps it was because the protagonist seemed too wooden for me to care about him one way or the other, and perhaps because there were simply too many characters of middling importance floating around and gumming up the works.

But whatever it was, I was left thinking the execution to be lackluster while otherwise enjoying the premise, voice, and general plot. Excellent story of life and love, told from the viewpoint of the king of a small European country.
