Breaking the Ice by Mandy Baggot

It'll take your mind off of world issues. Marnie works in her late grandfather's sweet shop in the small village of Shipley. She lives with her grandmother. Marnie was raised by her grandparents and Shipley has been her home. Marnie has always dreamed of traveling the world as her mother has done.

Marnie had a boyfriend, Ashley, but he is now working in New York city.

She sent him away because she believed that she was obligated to stay and take care of the sweet shop. Her grandfather died and her grandmother broke her leg and Marnie felt it was her responsibility to stay in Shipley and take care of things. Now, Ashley has met someone else and he is bringing her home for his parent's anniversary party.

Marnie and her shop are under attack. There is a woman who is campaigning to get her shop closed because no one should make a living selling sugar to unsuspecting customers. The woman is willing to do anything to ruin Marnie and her business. This is a fun story.

Marnie meets Josh, a new and attractive a young man who comes to work with her. He is charming, does magic tricks and is willing to work hard in the shop. He has a secret. Beth, Marnie's best friend, is nearing the end of her pregnancy and now she is having second thoughts about delivering her baby. Beth does not want to admit there is not an alternative to giving birth.

And then there is Doris Day, a neighbor, who is the village reporter. Nothing happens, no matter the hour of the day, which Doris does not know and report to everyone. The village is a beautiful place, right on the sea. The people who live in the village are like small town people everywhere. Everyone knows all about their neighbors. I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Dec 18, Nancy's Romance Reads marked it as to-read.

The idea of having the readers participate in a story they'd like to read is one I really like.

Especially since readers can be very critical of what they do not like. I was one of the readers who voted on names and characteristics for Zac and Avery. I loved taking part and was very eager to see how the story would shape up. I knew from my first glance at the beautiful cover it was going to be good. I loved having the book told from both Avery and Zac's points of view, especially with the way it The idea of having the readers participate in a story they'd like to read is one I really like.

I loved having the book told from both Avery and Zac's points of view, especially with the way it was told.

I got to know Avery, her thoughts, feelings, and how she felt about Zac from the moment they met. When they reconnected, I really wondered what Avery was thinking, but was so happy to finally get Zac's spin on things. As much as I loved being in Avery's head, I loved being in Zac's more.

I feel like I had a stronger emotional connection with him. The two of them had such chemistry together and I loved seeing them spark off each other. There were parts of the story I wish had been better developed. This is perhaps where being in Avery's head would've been beneficial.

I wish I knew more about Avery's past from when she had Zac were apart, in particular her relationships. I would've liked to have seen more of Zac when his life had changed from what he wanted it to be and his interaction with his father and family after that. Beyond that, and wanting more to read of course, the story was very well written.

I laughed and got emotional. I really enjoyed reading the story and couldn't put the book down.

I stayed up late in the night to finish it and it was so worth it. Torrest has done a wonderful job of taking reader's input and creating a story that's memorable. She took bits and pieces and put together two characters I loved and a story I enjoyed. The tagline at the bottom of the synopsis.

What is Kobo Super Points?

Sweet, inspiring, a little funny, a little angsty, a little sexy. I can't wait to see what she writes next. May 03, Christie72 rated it really liked it Shelves: Torrest since I have been a fan of hers for quite some time. I knew it was going to be different as she wrote the book based on input and ideas from her readers, and it exceeded all my expectations. It was filled with all the romance, steam, and humor that makes her books so good. Avery is home from college when she meets the newest hockey player in town…Zac! Oh my…he is sex on a stick and then some.

And, it becomes evident that he is also a huge manwhore. They do develop a friendship over the next few years, but that attraction and lust is always simmering beneath the surface. One night changes everything between the two, and they go their separate ways only to meet several years later. Both of their lives are different than they thought it would be. Will this time be different? Will they get their HEA? You really have to read this great book to find out! The relationship between Avery and Zac takes place over a number of years, but I loved it!

Torrest is taking the chemistry and emotions and stringing us along perfectly. Avery and Zac had a lot going on as a couple, but the way each character is developed and explored made me invested in them as individuals. In other words, their own individual lives were just as important as their life as a potential couple. Torrest a couple of years ago when I read Remember When, and she has had me hooked since then. Every character she creates just draws you in, and I love that!

Breaking the Ice

I recommend reading Breaking the Ice if you like a sweet, sexy romance with some sense of humor thrown in. Dec 17, Stacia rated it liked it. Torrest wrote this book inspired by reader's suggestions and requests. It not only shows how much she cares about her fans, but that she really listens to her readers and those that love her books. I wasn't sure how it would all work out, but I think overall it still allowed her voice to be heard, even with reader's ideas and thoughts. As a fan of T's Remember Trilogy I was excited to read something new and different from her. She has su She has such an amazing ability to write characters that readers just fall in love with.

But when she is asked to help plan a party and comes face to face with Zach McAllister, her teenage crush, sparks fly and the sexual tension is through the roof. She can't help but be intrigued by the man that he has become and wants to see if there is something more between them. There's always something to look forward to. If you are in the mood for a friends to lovers, second chance love story that is sweet, a little angsty, and sexy then this book is for you.

I did think that it was a little slow at times. Also, the story or really just their back story could have been developed better and it was a little cheesy in parts. I enjoyed Avery's point of view, but when it was time for Zach's side of the story I felt like it lacked romance and could have been a little more interesting. Overall, this was a light, cute, loving story. Dec 19, Bethany rated it really liked it Shelves: This story was all of the above. Slap on a serving of second chance romances, feisty banter, a female lead that actually has a spine, and you have a great read.

Now dollop a sexy lead man on top and you have yourself a page turner! I also loved knowing that everything in the story was voted on by the fans. I wished I had been part of it. It would be like planning a Today Show wedding. How fun it would have been to see the winning votes come to life on the pages, what a unique way to include the readers.

I loved that they seemed real, like a couple you could hang out with. I love the realistic feel to them. They had careers going down the crapper and GASP…they had bills!

They were not filthy rich having their driver bring them to their amazing penthouses or benefit parties! I loved that Zac was honest with who he was, knowing that he was a womanizer and maybe not what a gal would call husband material while living up to his nickname, Maniac. He is the bad boy with the squishy inside, but you have to work a bit to get to it. Avery was his perfect other half from the get-go even if she did not know it. Zac needed a girl to call him out on his actions and not be one to just toss her clothes on the floor to become another notch in his bedpost. He needed someone to open his mind up to love beyond the one thing that broke his heart; hockey.

When they finally cannot deny what is between them any longer, it is hot! To hell with "Breaking the Ice", they melt it! Love, Love, Loved it! Jan 21, Robin B rated it liked it Shelves: With the fans being able to dictate a lot of the details and how the story would go. I think that was awesome and it's what drew me to this story. Unfortunately, I don't think it worked out so well.

I adored the first part when we are in Avery's head. It's when Zac takes over the POV that it goes downhill. For the life of me I couldn't figure out what this story was supposed to be about when he took over. Is it Ave 2. Is it Avery and Zac's love story? Maybe, we do get a smidgen of that in there. Is it the history and workings of the bar? Cause we get quite a bit of that. Is it random thoughts that seem to pop up out of nowhere?

Because that's the majority of what I read. And sadly, we don't really get a lot of that. We get snippets here and there, and a few longer periods, but still. Even when they are together in the same scene, the scene is not necessarily about them. Example would be all the time we spent reading about the Norman Festival- they were together, but we weren't really TOLD anything about them or see anything beyond their working relationship.

We're told more about how the band is outside and how the bar is doing great business and how the town isn't really as uppity as Zac once thought. The actual writing as far as grammar, punctuation etc, etc. But the storyline just didn't hit it's mark. Jan 14, Erin Paige Bixby rated it really liked it Shelves: The character development was very in depth. Provided a great opportunity to bond with them. I like that the author gave clear timelines as the story progressed so it didn't feel like everything happened so fast. Not a lot of repeating.

There were some surprising touches of humor as well. This is a new to me author and I am excited to try more! She knows what playboys they can be. So when she meets Zac "Maniac" McAllister, she immediately puts him in the friend zone. After 3 years, she decides to take a chance. Zac gets traded to Dallas after one of the best nights of his life. He suspects Avery had something to do with it. He gets injured before his first season with the new team is over. Is this his chance to make everything right and try again?

All he knows for sure is that she is the only person who makes him feel again. Dec 26, Peach rated it liked it. Avery also felt like she was in the background. I think that I would have enjoyed the book more if there were more romance and more together moments of the couple.

Dec 18, Sammie rated it really liked it Shelves: To he honest, this book could have sucked which it definitely did not and I'd have loved it. I enjoyed reading Zac and Avery's story but what I loved was the fact that I helped make it happen. Right from the beginning T. Torrest was asking for names, eye colour, careers etc and the whole way through I was voting along with everyone else on her Facebook page.

So in the beginning when Zac and Avery were meeting, I got that little extra bit excited when his eyes were green- I picked green! The fact To he honest, this book could have sucked which it definitely did not and I'd have loved it. The fact that I felt so invested in this book definitely made it easier to fall in love with it but it was Torrests writing, the humour and the sweet moments that made me fall in love with it. Definitely worth reading if you want something light and happy with a some laughs. Dec 24, Audrey added it Shelves: Was anticipating this since I love Remember When and love her writing.

This one unfortunately not for me. It started ok but the story jumped from one year to the next and we get a glimpse of their building attractions and friendship which is nice but not enough for a solid story. It's fast paced and just not enough for me. Everything happened like watching a potential good movie on fast forward. By midway I started skimming that's not a good sign and I just skimmed through the paragraph to catch u Was anticipating this since I love Remember When and love her writing.

By midway I started skimming that's not a good sign and I just skimmed through the paragraph to catch up with what's bei said so I can get on to the story but again it's always cut short and skipped. This story doesn't hold my interest and too 'jumpy'. Jan 29, Jackie Deans Zielke rated it it was amazing. Another winning read I loved this book from the first page. It is a sweet love story about friends who have feelings beyond friendship but are afraid to act on it.

The story is to,d over a ten year period of time. Some sexy times sweet moments and plenty of angst but not over the top. Another win by this author! Dec 30, Kristen Gough rated it really liked it. This is a cute and fun love story that was full of good feels and I enjoyed reading this. Zac and Avery are a good fit for each other and I enjoyed the chemistry between these two. This is the first story I've come across where the author utilized the input of their readers to create the story and I must admit I found that to be quite fascinating and it added a whole new level of interest to this story for me as well.
