I had rated this book five stars in my first review, but after thinking about a few mistakes, I changed it to a four. I couldn't get it out of my head how Betsy could drive 20 miles out into the country, deliver all that laundry, and have time to stop by Duncan's place, so I checked and this would have been impossible uless she was on a paved straight lane.
Even at that, she should have changed horses for the 20 mile trek back. Another thing was that I thought he lived in a shack and then he had these beautiful polished wood floors. And why was it freezing in the house? He was used to working with wood, so why didn't he fix it. And speaking of fixing things, why didn't somebody fix Betsy's squeaking wheel? I enjoyed the story, but it was not accurate and that's a shame. This was such a great book and couldn't stop reading. The storyline was awesome about a gentleman of mixed blood and how some people who knew him for a long period of time could turn at the drop of hat and almost kill him in an instant.
After serving a horrible prison sentence he is released to find that people are still willing to believe the worst of him even though he did not commit the crime. The love of young widow changes his heart and they go through such adversity to be able to live their dream! Definitely a great read! I read this author some time ago and decided not to read a book of hers again. I forgot that I did not care for her style of writing, so I wasted my money. This author spends too many words on the characters thoughts and not enough on their interaction. Paragraphs of thought to get to the characters response.
Paragraphs repeating the same thoughts.

Judging by the 4 and 5 star reviews, her style is pleasing to some, but not to this reader. I would have rated this book one star, but I liked the two main characters and the story, but writing style ruined it for me. Ok folks spoiler alert, I liked this book, decent read and love scenes, but the way the hero came about confessing his past to the heroine was soo terribly written and drug out for about 3 chapters I wanted to slap this book with a King Kong "F"!!!
But I'll be selfish because I'm partial to historical western romances, and the fact that the heroines strawberry pie inspired me to bake a strawberry cobbler that came out deeelish.
