Now for just a moment, we have just a moment for it. You could spend hours following this through. There is a Person. There is a Stranger. There is an unusual appearance, who appears again and again in the Old Testament Scriptures. An unusual Person, He is called God [Genesis He is called the Angel of the covenant [Malachi 3: He is called the Angel of the face, He is called the Angel of the presence [Isaiah And He appears in the Old Testament Scriptures again and again and again. I have just a moment just to point it out to you. We find this unusual presence, Person, in the thirty-first chapter of the Book of Genesis.
I turned the pages of my Bible and read again in the thirty-second chapter of the Book of Genesis: And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: Who is this Man that wrestles with Jacob all night long [Genesis And he becomes the prince of God [Genesis That is none other than the second Person of the Holy Trinity.
That is none other than the Son of God preincarnate. I turn the page again, in the forty-[eighth] chapter of the Book of Genesis, Jacob is blessing Joseph, and he speaks of that Angel. The same thing again, the God which shepherded me and cared for me all my life long until this day, even the Angel which redeemed me from all evil; the Angel, the God, the second Person of the Trinity, Jesus preincarnate.
Recently On Women
I turn again to the third chapter of the Book of Exodus, one of the most famous of all the theophanies in the Scriptures: Now Moses kept the flock of [Jethro] his father-in-law, in Midian: And the Angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. And when the Lord saw that Moses turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. The Angel of the Lord is the God of heaven. Who is this Angel of the Lord who is described as the God that spoke unto Moses out of the bush?
It is the second Person of the holy and blessed Trinity. It is Jesus, the Son of God. This is a preincarnate theophany appearance of Jesus. I have taken too much time already. All of that I emphasize just to remind us that it is one Book. It is one Lord.
Be a Warrior Woman, Not a Wounded One
It is one Jesus. It is one altar. It is one name. It is one sacrifice. I have spoken oh twenty-five minutes already. May I speak for a moment of the significance of this vision to Joshua, to us who live in the world? By that He means that He is the God that leads all of the armies of heaven—the hosts of the seraphim, the cherubim, the angels. I do not know what hosts God has in glory, but whatever, however, how many, how multitudinous, this Warrior Christ is at their head.
And think what an assurance that was to Joshua. There with so much before; a whole land to conquer; a fortified city to overcome; a strange and a new experience to the people whom he was seeking to lead. At their head now is not Joshua. He is just to obey. He is just to follow orders. The great Commander and Leader is this Warrior Christ, who is at the head of the armies of glory [Joshua 5: Why, it was the same thing for Joshua as it was for Elisha. And the Lord opened up his eyes. That is what it meant to Joshua. The hosts of heaven, the very stars in their courses, were mandated under the great Commander, the Warrior Christ.
He could not fail [Joshua 5: No wonder the walls of Jericho fell down.
God led in the way [Joshua 6: We have therein a revelation to us of our life in this time and in this history. All through this Bible; and here again there is presented the violent conflict in this world, in this universe. The powers of darkness, Paul enumerated them, gave them names; the powers of darkness. But how is this possible? It is possible only when we focus on who God is, how great He is, and what He means to us.
He is our light. He is our salvation. Because of Him, we are no longer living in the darkness of sin. Though an army deploy against me, my heart is not afraid; though war break out against me, still I am confident. Confidence not in our own strength and abilities but in God and His strength and abilities and His power.
He knows that if he and his demons can get believers to fear, they have gone a long way in winning a spiritual battle. David, the veteran warrior for God, knew the secret to winning the fear game - focus completely on God. We talked last week about Jesus being called the wonderful counselor and that because he was fully human and fully God that He understands what we are going through and that through the Holy Spirit, He can give us counsel on how to live to please God. This week we will look at the second name, but before we dive in I would like to honor the text by reading it in Hebrew style which is to stand for its reading.
Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan— The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as warriors rejoice when dividing the plunder.
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this. You may be seated.

Imagine yourself as an Israelite. You can feel the weight of the neighboring armies approaching Jerusalem and you know you only have a set amount of time before your city will be overthrown, the prophet speaks of this daily. Where do you find joy in those words? Yet, that is not where the prophet ends, the prophet describes one who will come in the future, that will be the wonderful counselor, the mighty warrior God, everlasting father and prince of peace.

Today, we will look at the name probably translated as mighty God, but will give it a clearer picture as to its use in the Old Testament. The word used here in the Hebrew is a compound word for God, El-Gibbor. El was a common name for God. It occurs times in the Masoretic Text of the Old Testament.

Some times it referenced men, for example Isra-el, or one who wrestled with God. Sometimes it is a term used of men, like in 2 Samuel Other times though it is used of God. How can we drive them out? You saw with your own eyes the great trials, the signs and wonders, the mighty hand and outstretched arm, with which the Lord your God brought you out.
The Lord your God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear. Moreover, the Lord your God will send the hornet among them until even the survivors who hide from you have perished. Do not be terrified by them, for the Lord your God, who is among you, is a great and awesome God. Great and Awesome God, is this word El-Gibbor. Here God is pictured as a Warrior God.
