The Furniture Doctor by George Grotz (, Paperback, Revised) | eBay
Unbound Worlds Exploring the science fiction and fantasy universe. As a retiree rebuilding old furniture it is as relevant today as then! Many witty comments ie.: This is a great book for any person trying to save money repairing furniture finishes, recovering a damaged antique or trying to prevent a rip off by an unsavory seller, who manufactured an antique to sell.
Easy to read and understand by someone who has experience in furniture repair, etc. I have saved many a piece damaged by perfume, water with his approach. This is a 'bible' for the average amateur and full of good tips for both the experienced and fussy wood worker. I've used it for more than 30 years. Whenever I have a problem I start my research with this book, and I usually come back to it again after looking at a number of other sources.

There are suggestions that you'll not find anywhere else. The humor is a delight. However Grotz wrote most of this before the development of many current ideas about how to preserve antiques. I imagine that employing some of his suggestions might lead to a reduction in the market value of an item.

However, I don't think it will ever lead to a reduction in your personal enjoyment of the piece. Im so glad to have a copy of this book again-I used to borrow it from the library-havent seen it in years, and have missed it BADLY! It is just a fun read, besides having alot of great information presented in a really delightful manner.
Mr Grotz has a very low-to-the-ground type of style that is refreshing-he demistifies the entire subject of antique furniture and its care. If you are dealing with MAJOR museum quality antiques-this aint the book for you, but if, like most of us, you are just collecting a houseful of affordable, cool 'old stuff'-this is THE book to have! A little bit tired in content, but useful for antiques, restoration, repair of older finishes. It precedes modern finishes so understandably doesn't add much for more modern stuff, but very useful detailed information.
I've used this book for 30 years - to learn about furniture, to learn about tools and, most of all, to learn how to finish, re-finish and repair furniture.

It's an invaluable reference and guide with no pretentions. The drawings are excellent - you're not buying a lot of glossy photos of unaffordable furniture. Grotz's style is folks-y and sometimes coy, but it doesn't get in the way of the wealth of information he shares. See all 51 reviews.
Most recent customer reviews. Published 1 year ago. My copy is now dog-eared one corner completely chewed off , and I wouldn't replace it for anything, though I am happy to see the book is still available to new customers. It not only covers how to identify finishes so you'll get off on the correct foot and will know what grade If you enjoy buying old furniture and refinishing it, or just help with identifying the period it was made, this is a wonderful book for you.
Nov 14, Foxtower rated it liked it Shelves: A good overview on how to make that old beat up chair work as good as new yet still show it's wonderful patina from age. Grotz includes many tips and tricks such as using vinegar to loosen old glue, but in his section "tools of the trade", his crude drawings My edition has no photo's don't really do justice to what he's written. The information is there and invaluable, but may require the reader aquire some knowledge and experience beforehand to really appreciate and understand his narratives.
Jan 10, Fishsanwitt marked it as to-read Shelves: A fun read, the uncle George stories are funny and the finishing advice still works. Flexner is a better and much more modern author on this subject though. Also covers faking and fakes. While some of the information is not only out-of-date but completely unethical, there are useful sections on furniture styles, dating methods, and identification of wood species.
