It stood for the rock of my faith, the the sacrament of my marriage, the fact that the pretty was made through fire and crushing. Karen Beattie, I think, would understand this and be able to articulate it better. She already has, in fact, in her book.
It was uncomfortable, but it was also cleansing somehow. And, for that matter, I hope not to be able to look at my own blessings with quite the same nonchalance as I did yesterday…. This post quiets me in an unexpected, pondering way……. Anthony, for lost things found, and for your story, Sarah……. Your email address will not be published. But there was an envelope with my name on it in big block letters. And what to my shocked eye should appear, but… …a Saint Anthony necklace.

I think the most important moments in any life of faith happen when life sucks, and our God doesn't seem to be showing up. The problem is not with God, but in how we perceive Him, what we expect from Him, and how in our grief we can re-frame the situation to craft some kind of "why" for the narrative of our loss. There is so much that I loved about this book. Karen goes beyond the usual Christian platitudes and tells her story of disappointments and anger and heartbreak with detail and heart.
The writing is evocative without trying too hard, and the details shape each scene perfectly. Karen moves effortlessly from remembrances of her earlier life to her present situations and each flashback has a purpose. Karen does a great job showing us her Catholic faith as she discovers it, and describing how people in her faith community met her in her pain and gave her love and support to grow through it, and to let it change her. I am encouraged; I am less afraid of whatever my own days of adversity will be, because of this book. I don't know if it is the vulnerability of the author, the all-too-familiar topic of not having enough, or the beautiful writing, but Karen Beattie's book has had an enduring impact on me.
The hard-won revelations and the wonderful, unexpected resolutions in Beattie's book are like little gifts for those slogging through difficult times. The honesty, openness and hope that permeate these pages will give you a glimpse into a life of struggle and disappointment that, despite what the world offers up, is still shot through with joy. If you find yourself in tough or even devastating circumstances or if you're just tired of ramming your head against the same old wall wishing your life could be better , may you find yourself in the pages of Beattie's book.
And may you find, like she does, not easy answers, but a new outlook, a deeper grounding, and a rich and beautiful life that takes you by surprise. One person found this helpful. It was a pleasure to read, thought provoking and lovely. What a solid book! I couldn't put it down! Very thought provoking and well written. Really challenges you to think about what you believe and to test it thoroughly.
