I got this expecting the sketches and cartoons to be funny as usual and I wasn't disappointed. Stephen Hoover writes some of the funniest sketches I've ever heard.

It's well worth a read through and contains all the kind of comedy you'd expect. Hoover and Laird's comedy book is actually pretty funny.

I never knew there were so many genres of comedy that is "formed" for a certain person and that' there's a reason WHY as well. In this sense, I am so much more informed about myself and my personality than I did before. The book gives the history of comedy as well; how it developed throughout the ages, how it affected the mindsets of people, what it did for the world in general, etc. Comedy played such a massive part in getting us where we are now! There are also great tips in the book on how to write a comedy starting from the basics and working up to a precise style; what genre suits you best and how to figure that out, where to start, who to look at listing comedians of all kinds , and so much more.

The book itself is presented with humour, is fun and easy to read, very finely detailed, and kept me interested the entire time. So many weird facts I didn't know! Awesome book, and I'm glad I purchased it. I have to say this book wasn't what I was expecting. I thought it would just be tips and tricks for comedy writing, but I never expected that I'd receive a history lesson on the beginnings of comedy, and the modern day comedians that coined the hit genres of today!

Are You an Author?

This book really can teach you every single thing you could ever need to know about writing comedy, and I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of information in this concise ebook. I definitely recommend it for anyone looking to get into this genre or writing or performing! In college I wanted to be an aspiring comedian and even did a skit for a program. It has taken this "The Joke's On You" to finally provide me with the knowledge of comedy as work that, at its best, must be constructed and systematic.

Comedy is more than just telling jokes, and The Jokes On You: How to Write Comedy convinces you of that. It has given me the tools on how to improve my comedy, from the writing to its delivery. Just like other pieces of work, it is to be taken seriously and undergoes critical analysis so as to be executed at its very best. I personally think that anyone can benefit from reading this book. Comedians from novice to experts can always learn a thing or two about the art of comedy. Others have noticed my improvements and I have a new edge from this reading.

Books by Stephen Hoover (Author of The Joke's On You)

Great job Stephen Hoover! One person found this helpful. I highly recommend this book. Comedy is something that everyone enjoys but few really understand how it really works. This book is the first that I have read that covers everything fully. It begins with the history of the earliest comedy and basic comedy "philosophy". Basic skills and structures then follow to establish the foundational tools. Application of those tools then follow in varied environments from Stand-up to Film. Examples are abundantly used from real world artists and performances to illustrate the application of those techniques.

Exercises are even included to really encourage participation and to get you to that next level. The author has successfully created a "how to" without becoming formulaic. Anyone even remotely interested in writing comedy should make this required reading! I am looking forward to reading more from this author.

This book ends up being more of a 'jumping off point' for various types of comedy, and a brief history of comedy, than a 'How to Write Comedy' book. Which is unfortunate, as the book's subtitle is 'How to Write Comedy. These are just minor quibbles but it does make you start questioning all of the 'facts' the author lists.

Developing trust is important with a non-fiction book. Too many errors, and you start to wonder.
